Young Scholars on Campus This Summer

1103 YOUNG SCHOLARS TO ATTEND SUMMER INSTITUTES

     COLUMBUS -- For the eighth consecutive summer, The Ohio 
State University's Young Scholars Program is operating 
Summer Institutes on the the Columbus campus to provide its 
pre-college Scholars with an intensive program of academic 
enrichment, study and social skills enhancement, and 
exposure to career opportunities.

     Students in grades 7 through 12 attend two-week 
institutes, while those entering college this fall have a 
one-week orientation.

     Last Sunday (7/23), 374 11th- and 12th-graders arrived 
to begin their institute.  These Scholars will attend 
classes and live in residence halls for two weeks and take 
part in career exploration within the various Ohio State 
colleges.

     On Aug. 6, 235 seventh- and eight-graders, will arrive 
on campus.  Ohio State hosted 394 ninth- and 10th-graders 
July 9-July 21.

     The curriculum for grades seven through 10 has been 
rewritten to include several guiding principles: tailoring 
the content to the Scholars' needs, integrating the summer 
content with the Scholars' regular year-long instructional 
program, and emphasizing the career exploration component.

     The academic curriculum includes classes in math, 
science, computers, art, English, music and foreign 
language.

     The Summer Institutes will conclude with an orientation 
week August 14-18 for 100 incoming college freshmen.  These 
Scholars will attend sessions on learning expectations and 
preparation, time management, critical thinking, career 
development, and social interaction. 

     "Our program has gone out into the school districts to 
give urban kids a chance to commit to a program that will 
commit to helping them obtain a college degree," said Floyd 
Hodoh, Columbus coordinator for YSP.

     The Young Scholars Program provides year-round 
academic, personal and skill development opportunities for 
economically disadvantaged minority youth.  Its main 
objective is to increase the number of students from 
underrepresented minority groups who enroll and succeed in 
colleges and universities. 

     There are currently about 1,670 Scholars, seveth 
graders through college sophomores, participating from nine 
major Ohio cities: Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, 
Columbus, Dayton, Lorain, Toledo and Youngstown.  

     The first class of Young Scholars, inducted as sixth 
graders in the spring of 1988, attended Ohio State or other 
colleges during the 1994-1995 academic year. 

     Young Scholars are guaranteed admission to Ohio State, 
along with financial aid, if they successfully complete the 
program through high school graduation with a B average or 
better in a college preparatory curriculum.  They come to 
the Columbus campus for two-week institutes each summer and 
take part in a variety of academic support activities in 
their hometowns throughout the year.  There are also 
programs provided for their parents.
