Ohio State and Georgia agree to home-and-home football series

Power 5 contenders will meet in 2030 in Athens and in 2031 in Columbus

The Ohio State University and the University of Georgia have agreed to a home-and-home football series for the 2030 and 2031 seasons. Ohio State will make its first trip to Georgia’s Sanford Stadium Sept. 14, 2030, while Georgia will visit Ohio Stadium for the first time on Aug. 30, 2031.

The games will represent the first regular season contests for Ohio State against a Southeastern Conference opponent since the 1987 and 1988 seasons, when Ohio State played a home-and-home series with LSU. The Tigers and Buckeyes played at Ohio Stadium on Sept. 24, 1988, a 36-33 Ohio State victory in the last Ohio Stadium game featuring an SEC school. Ohio State has played 85 non-conference home games since.

“This is going to be a terrific series for fans of both programs to look forward to down the road,” Diana Sabau, deputy athletics director, said. “This series is a testament to our commitment to scheduling and playing really good intersectional contests. It’s these kind of games that make for memorable experiences for our student-athletes.”

Ohio State and Georgia have met just once on the gridiron. The Bulldogs, coached by Ray Goff, capped a 10-2 season with a 21-14 victory over John Cooper’s Buckeyes in the Jan. 1, 1993, Florida Citrus Bowl, played in Orlando. Robert Smith made his way into the end zone twice for the Buckeyes off short runs. Garrison Hearst scored twice for the Bulldogs off short runs. Frank Harvey finished a game-winning 80-yard fourth-quarter drive with a TD on a run from the one. Ohio State ended the season at 8-3-1.

Georgia played for the College Football Playoff championship in 2017, posted 11 wins in 2018 and is currently No. 6 in the initial 2019 CFP playoff rankings with a 7-1 record. The Buckeyes, inaugural winners of the CFP national championship, have six 12-or-more victory seasons since 2012 and are No. 1 in the CFP rankings with an 8-0 record heading into Saturday’s nationally televised (FOX Sports) game at Ohio Stadium against Maryland.

Ohio State now has five home-and-home series and 10 total games scheduled with Power 5 teams in the next 12 years, including:
