Ohio State professor invents way to remove dents in tubas

COLUMBUS – An associate professor at The Ohio State University has developed a cost- and time-saving way to keep tubas and other brass instruments in shape to make beautiful music. The invention is called the “Dent Eraser,” and it was created by Jim Akins, associate professor of tuba and euphonium.

With the help of Ohio State band director Jon Woods and members of the marching band, Akins will demonstrate how dents are removed from instruments and other metals such as car fenders and teapots for a film crew from the American Institute of Physics (AIP) who will visit Columbus Tuesday to film the technique for an upcoming television feature on new inventions.

The AIP produces stories that address new developments in science, physics and technology for approximately 75 television networks across the country.
