World Jewish Congress Praises University#s Action

          WORLD JEWISH CONGRESS PRAISES UNIVERSITY'S ACTION

     The World Jewish Congress late this afternoon (10/26) released a statement 
expressing appreciation for action by The Ohio State University's College of Med
icine to cover a portrait of a Nazi doctor included on a mural depicting famous 
physicians and researchers in the history of medicine.

     The doctor, Hubertus Strughold, held medical positions in Nazi Germany and 
was brought to the United States after World War II to work on the U.S. space pr
ogram.  He subsequently made medical contributions for which he was dubbed the "
father of space medicine.  "His activities in Germany during World War II were n
ot publicly known when the stained glass mural was hung in the College of Medici
ne more than two decades ago.

     The World Jewish Congress praised the decision of Ohio State
     University to remove the portrait of Dr. Hubertus Strughold,
     who was chief of Nazi Germany's Air Force Institute for
     Aviation Medicine, from its mural of medical heroes.
     
     Malcolm Baroway, Executive Director of University
     Communications for Ohio State University, told the WJC that
     the Strughold portrait was currently covered over and would
     be removed from the mural as soon as technical experts can
     do so.
     
     Edgar Bronfman, President of the World Jewish Congress,
     praised Ohio State University for acting swiftly to right a
     wrong which was not of their doing.
     
     "Ohio State was a victim along with the American people of
     the cover-up perpetrated by Dr. Strughold of his shameful
     past", Mr. Bronfman said.
